Spanish Summer Camp for Teenagers in Spain – Tarragona
This Spanish Summer Camp for Teenagers in Spain, takes place in Tarragona, a pleasant coastal resort approximately 60 miles south of Barcelona (50 miles from the Barcelona airport).
Tarragona is a provincial capital and has a population of around 115,000. It is situated on the Costa Dorada and is an ideal location for a teenage program of this kind. The town is lively, but not too big; it has its own sandy beaches within walking distance of the school; it is very close to Port Aventura (one of Europe’s largest theme parks) and is only an hour from Barcelona by bus or train.
Majestically situated on a rocky hill, standing high above the sea, Tarragona is an ancient place. The first settlers were Iberians, followed by Carthaginians; and later Tarragona was used as the base for the Roman conquest of the peninsula. Tarraco became the capital of Rome’s eastern Iberian province, leading to the building of various temples and monuments in and around the city. Some of the most impressive monuments include the Passeig Arqueologic with its Roman walls, the Forum, the Amphitheatre and the Aqueduct. Today, Tarragona is one of the most important ports in the country. Not only is there an industrial port, but also the recently opened Port Esportiu, where, as well as looking at the leisure boats at their moorings, you can also visit a number of bars and restaurants. Further along the coast, various beaches can be found, including the Arrabassada and Platja Llarga, famous both for their beauty and their cleanliness.
International House Tarragona – Teen Program
13 to 17 years of age
Spanish Summer Camp for Teenagers in Spain at International House Tarragona
International House Tarragona opened in 1980. The school building is located on a broad tree-lined avenue (the Rambla) in the very center of the city. The International House Tarragona school is housed in a typical town house and there are 8 spacious classrooms as well as a study area with internet use for students.
The course, which includes a full social program, is run as a joint venture between International House Barcelona and International House Tarragona. The Director, Keith Armstrong, and his team have extensive experience of organizing junior courses and dealing with younger students as a large majority of International House Tarragona’s language students are under the age of 17.
The Spanish Summer Camp for Teenagers in Spain at International House Tarragona is designed to ensure that students enjoy their Spanish classes as much as they enjoy the rest of the course program. Classroom activities are therefore varied and where possible involve tasks or games that make the learning process interesting and fun. The aim of the course is to develop the students’ language skills in all areas but the emphasis is on developing speaking and comprehension skills, so there are a lot of practical activities that involve a great deal of interaction. As we have students from very many nationalities, it is relatively easy to ensure that everyone uses Spanish to communicate. We also try to ensure that students get the most out of their visits to places of interest in and around Tarragona so some class time is devoted to project work focused on the social program activities.
